On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” New York City, promising “a new era” and an bold start to his term.

A Historic Figure

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Defying advice to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Steering by Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Basic Tests of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering basic services: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
