Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies represent an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument rests on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The true danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 separate systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
