The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a significant honors show nears, you'll find a clamor for introducing of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles in the world and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
