Similar to bad weather swept through the north-west the night before, City blew United away at the their home ground. It was a convincing three goal victory for their manager's side owing to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that firmly established their title credentials as they consolidated their place at the top of the table.

Back-to-Back Defeats for United

This scoreline marked successive WSL setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the initial occasion since last May, placing them a sizable gap off the top team with their championship aspirations hanging by a thread.

United’s capability to juggle league and continental soccer with a small team has been a frequently analyzed subject since they earned a place in the UCL. Reviewing the schedule, it always appeared this was the matchday that would truly test this fortitude. Sadly for the away side, they appeared fatigued all game, the memorable win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

Skinner had sought to make changes with a several changes. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all brought freshness, although the omission of the on-form Malard to the substitutes was questioned.

Former Manchester City player Park came most likely to score, rattling the post, but the away team were creatively abject and failed to register a solitary shot on goal.

The hosts, in contrast, could have increased their cushion when a superb Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it mattered little to the hosts. After failing to defeat any team who placed above them last season, the manager's side now have victories against Arsenal and Manchester United to put them in a commanding situation after nine matches.
