New research indicates that patients who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such medications must be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have stopped the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural support.
