No professional sports organization markets equal footing in the manner of the NFL: it’s the entire brand. But through 10 weeks during the current schedule, this is not a competition with perfect equilibrium between the good, the bad and the mediocre. It’s one where the majority of teams are merely adequate.
NFC Standings Definition
Within the National Football Conference, for the most part, we see clearer definition. Los Angeles and Seattle (both at 7-2) look like the most well-rounded squads across the league, and delivered overwhelming triumphs during Sunday's action. Philadelphia at 6-2 notwithstanding their difficulties still have one of the most talented rosters in the league, likewise with the Packers (5-2-1). Even the Lions (six and three), with their fluctuating form in trench play while managing coaching drama, have demonstrated they can hammer quality opponents. For all five, you can still easily put together a route to the final game.
AFC Confusion
Turning to the American Football Conference, postseason landscape is a jumbled mess. The four teams leading their divisions after ten games: the Colts, Patriots, Broncos (each with 8-2 records) along with Pittsburgh (5-4). Read that again. Not the Chiefs. Buffalo is missing. Neither Ravens nor Bengals. The usual contenders, backed by the league’s best quarterbacks, have either significant personnel gaps or have suffered medical setbacks.
League Equality Design
To some extent, it’s the league’s ideal. However, witnessing the current division frontrunners within the conference still feels strange. Areas of each team pass the championship smell test, yet not completely. If you were asked to commit to your conference championship predictions today, would you comfortably pick any of the current division frontrunners?
Squad Examinations
Indianapolis Colts
Starting in Indianapolis, the signal-caller hasn't descended to pumpkin status. But the last two weeks have been worrying. He's reverting to giving away possessions and failing against blitzes. He suffered seven sacks against the Falcons during Sunday's contest, and had a short sequence where he delivered an interception and coughed up the ball thrice. This is a week after he gave away possessions five times against the Steelers.
The Colts attack performed well initially since Jones evaded catastrophic mistakes. Taylor along with the blockers make the Colts capable of overcoming periodic mistakes, as they did in Berlin. However, if Jones reverts to his historically mistake-heavy play would terminate postseason aspirations.
Patriots Examination
The Patriots feel somewhat similar. Last season, they were considered jokes. Now, they’re the NFL's most pleasant shock and the strongest squad in the NFL post seven wins in a row. If not for committing turnover errors a winnable game facing Pittsburgh, they'd possess at 9–1 as the league's best. Previously, they appeared aged and sluggish. Now they’re young, fast and unafraid. However, we must acknowledge the ease of the Patriots' matchups. They have faced the most manageable schedule across the NFL, and there have still been cracks. Drake Maye has been sacked on 35 occasions – among the highest totals – including particular impacts he endured during the game appeared dangerous. Over time, those beatings accumulate.
Denver Analysis
The Broncos hold 8–2 as well, and it still feels as if they’re holding their breath. The Denver signal-caller has been erratic, and the offensive unit laboring, while the defensive unit provides all the heavy lifting. Without serviceable quarterback play, the Broncos won't frighten playoff opponents. The Chargers are also hovering in the Western division holding a 7-2 record, however, health issues within their blocking corps will present challenges to achieve championship contention.
Steelers Examination
Meanwhile, Pittsburgh exists, somehow still leading their division even after suffering a 25-10 defeat from the Chargers in the evening game. They've been outscored overall, their defense too often disappears, and the QB's current constraints during his career phase regularly manifest. At 5-4, they're barely clinging, but Baltimore, with Lamar Jackson healthy again and facing easier opponents, are on a three-game win streak. It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that Baltimore has closed the gap to just one game, but how rapidly this occurred highlights deficiencies within Pittsburgh’s inconsistencies. The fact Baltimore began losing five of six and currently seem likely to claim the title speaks volumes regarding the entire AFC.
Historical Favorites
The Ravens' form part within a trio of powerhouses – alongside the Bills and Chiefs – fueled by former MVP signal-callers, who would still strike the greatest concern for opponents should they reach postseason. They’re the No One Wants To See ‘Em teams, but the Chiefs and Bills continue to self-destruct.
Buffalo Analysis
Last week, Buffalo was celebrating post Chiefs triumph. On Sunday they suffered one of the most disappointing losses of the season. They didn't simply fail to the Dolphins; they looked terrible, falling 30-13 on the road. The Dolphins secured their first triumph against Buffalo in over three years.
